Highlights of the Biggest Running Events in the UK: 2024 Edition

The United Kingdom’s running calendar in 2024 was marked by several significant events that drew international attention and showcased exceptional athletic performances. Here are some of the highlights:

London Marathon (21 April 2024)

The 44th edition of the London Marathon witnessed remarkable achievements. Kenya’s Peres Jepchirchir clinched the women’s title, setting a women’s-only world record with a time of 2:16:16. In the men’s race, Alexander Munyao emerged victorious, completing the course in 2:04:01. The event also saw a record number of ballot entries, with 578,374 applicants, the highest ever for a marathon, as recognised by Guinness World Records. 

British Athletics Championships (July 2024)

Held at the Alexander Stadium, the championships featured standout performances across various disciplines. Daryll Neita secured the women’s 100 metres title with a time of 11.24 seconds, while Dina Asher-Smith dominated the 200 metres, finishing in 22.18 seconds. In the men’s events, Louie Hinchliffe won the 100 metres in 10.18 seconds, and Matthew Hudson-Smith took the 200 metres title with a 20.34-second finish.

Great North Run (September 2024)

The AJ Bell Great North Run, one of the world’s largest half marathons, once again attracted a vast number of participants. The elite races were fiercely contested, with notable performances that added to the event’s storied history. 

Cardiff Half Marathon (October 2024)

Celebrating its 21st anniversary, the Cardiff Half Marathon reached new heights with 29,000 participants. Kenyan athletes Patrick Mosin and Miriam Chebet secured victories in the men’s and women’s races, respectively. The event emphasised inclusivity with its ‘A Race For Everyone’ theme, engaging diverse community groups and celebrating the city’s rich cultural tapestry. 

These events not only highlighted the UK’s prominence in the global running community but also underscored the nation’s commitment to fostering athletic excellence and community engagement through sport.
